Programme Overview

The Work Integrated Learning Programme (WILP) is designed to expose aspiring craftsmen and technicians to real-world applications and abilities that are compatible with the requirements and needs of South Africa’s technical workforce. The plan aims to solve the country’s persistent scarcity of skilled workers by developing competence in vital disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry.

Key Highlights of the Programme

  • Duration & Structure: The WILP provides a full training experience, including a work-based learning stipend to help participants succeed throughout the curriculum. Successful applicants will be assigned to SARB’s headquarters in Pretoria, the SABN in Pretoria North, and cash centers in Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg.
  • Target groups: The program targets two important categories of students:
    • Artisan Group: Individuals having at least an N4 certificate from a Further Education and Training (FET) College are eligible for an occupational trade certification or trade exam after 36 months of practical work experience. Electrical, electronic, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry are some of the disciplines offered to craftsmen.
    • Technician Group: University of Technology graduates with at least an S4 qualification who need 12 months of practical work experience to earn their national certificate. Electrical and mechanical engineering are two technician-specific disciplines.
  • Locations: Participants will work in SARB’s Head Office in Pretoria, the SABN in Pretoria North, and SARB’s cash centers in Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg. These assignments expose learners to many parts of the financial and technical services industry.
    Stipend: To assist participants during their training, SARB provides a work-based learning stipend. This is intended to guarantee that learners may concentrate on their practical learning experience without being financially burdened.

Programme Requirements

To be eligible for the Work Integrated Learning Program, candidates must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Artisan Group: Learners must have at least an N4 certificate from a Further Education and Training College and be working toward an occupational trade certification. The following fields are eligible: electrical, electronics, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry. Applicants must also have 36 months of actual work experience to complete the trade qualification or trade exam.
  • Technician Group: Learners must be enrolled in a University of Technology with at least an S4 certification and have 12 months of practical work experience to achieve their national diploma. Electrical and mechanical engineering are also qualifying fields.
  • South African Citizenship: Applicants must be South African citizens, ensuring the programme provides opportunities for local talent to grow within the country’s economy.
