MERSETA Learnerships 2025 Application

Description

A learnership is an organized learning process that results in theoretical knowledge and practical abilities in the workplace, as well as a NQF-registered certificate.

A learnership is outcome-based rather than time-based, allowing for the acknowledgment of earlier learning. Learnership duration varies, but the average is around 18 months.

Note: In practice, to attain an artisan equivalent qualification (NQF level 4) four separate learnerships will have to be completed (i.e. qualifications at NQF levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 will have to be attained).

Conditions

  • Learners may be existing employees or new entrants
  • Learners must fulfill the admission requirements for the specific learnership as specified by the qualification requirements on which the learnership is based, as well as the selection criteria decided by the organisation taking on the learner

Application Process

  • Employers are workplace authorized and must fulfill the pre-registration conditions.
  • Training providers are accredited to deliver the specified learnership by the MERSETA ETQA.
  • Qualified assessors are available (both in-house and contracted in).
  • Companies market learnership opportunities using the media of their choice.
  • Learners may apply by following the corporate method as described.
  • Prospective candidates and opportunity seekers are urged to publish their information on the
  • Department of Labour’s online website since employers/companies may hire from the Employment Services for South Africa (ESSS) data base https://essa.labour.gov.za/EssaOnline/WebBeans/
  • Learner is selected by the company recruitment process
  • The learnership agreement is signed by the employer, provider, and learner (tripartite agreement).
  • A short-term work contract is signed between the employer and the student if the learner is jobless.
  • The learning plan and procedure are discussed and agreed upon with the supplier.
  • The employer finances the learnership with funding acquired from MERSETA.
  • Employer and provider provide relevant learning and experience while working closely to manage the learnership process.
  • Mentoring and feedback provide support to the learner.
  • Learner is assessed by a certified assessor(formative and summative assessments)
  • The merSETA Quality Assuror is tasked with moderating the evaluation, while the provider is responsible for internal moderation.
  • After successfully completing the learnership, the learner is given a national qualification.
  • Learner receive a statement of results for unit standards achieved if learnership is not successfully completed.
  • The employer may choose to hire the learner for a subsequent learnership, release the learner for future employment by another organization, or sign the learner up for a new learnership after the learnership is completed.

Trainee remuneration

  • The unemployed / pre-employed learner is paid an allowance. The minimum allowances for learners are regulated
