This organized effort gives South African youngsters the opportunity to be properly educated and equipped to work as Traffic Officers in the bustling and diverse metropolitan scene of Johannesburg.

About the JMPD Traffic Officer Training Programme

The JMPD Traffic Officer Training Programme is a full-time, in-house, and approved curriculum offered at the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Academy in Martindale. It is intended to provide devoted and disciplined young people with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to respect traffic regulations, promote road safety, and enforce municipal bylaws across the city.

Once enrolled, trainees get intense training in traffic laws, crime prevention strategies, handgun handling, first aid, crowd management, and other vital courses. Graduates who successfully complete the program are eligible for employment as Metro Police or Traffic Officers with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department.

REQUIREMENTS:

The Applicant must:

  • Be a South African citizen.
  • Possess a valid Senior Certificate (Grade 12 or equivalent NQF Level 4).
  • Applicants must submit original evidence of residency.
  • Have no criminal convictions or records.
  • Prepare to provide biometric data and other information to check for a criminal record.
  • Have a valid driver’s license (no learner’s permit required), with a minimum Code B.
  • Between the ages of 18 – 35 years.
  • Maintain physical and mental fitness. (A comprehensive medical certificate must be presented together with the application).
  • Be able to undergo and successfully complete a pre-training fitness exam.
  • Have no civil judgments for fraud and/or corruption against his/her name.
  • Be prepared to go through screening processes.
  • Be fluent in English.
  • Have no objections, be willing to carry a pistol, and wear a uniform.

Personal attributes:

The incumbent must be dependable, honest, have a strong sense of justice and honesty, have a good attitude, be patient, and be able to operate under pressure, in all weather conditions, and throughout shift hours.

Terms of Training:

Metro Police Trainees will be expected to complete an 18-month training program before being eligible for appointment as Metro Police Officers. Trainees shall be bound by the terms of their training contracts, Academy rules, and RTMC training policy during the training period. Trainees will be paid a stipend according to City policy.

Upon completion of training:

As a Qualified Metropolitan Police Officer, the incumbent must take the Municipality-determined oath of office and will be assigned to any region of the City of Johannesburg.
